Text replacement is one of my very favorite things across the Apple ecosystem. Add it once, it works everywhere. I must have hundreds by now. The only things missing for me is variables, like for the current date. (Settings → General → Keyboards → Text Replacement)

🆕📝 Yep, Everyone Is Right. Callsheet Is Great.

Congrats to @caseyliss@mastodon.social on the launch! I have a feeling this one is going far. 🚀

🆕📝 7 Things This Week [#107]

Offshore wind potential in the US is huge but untapped // The Verge

Offshore wind resources are plentiful enough to generate up to a quarter of the nation’s electricity by 2050, in time to help meet global climate goals.

Harness the wind!

A thing that just happened. I wanted to light a candle, but my electronic plasma lighter was too low on battery. I searched through my car for a charger, but couldn’t find a micro USB plug. I walked away, defeated. Then I realized that I had moved a pack of matches out of the way while digging. 🤦‍♂️

🆕📝 Threads (Actually) Adds Auto-Generated Alt Text

Some tests were performed.

I’m testing out transitioning from 1Password to iCloud Passwords with help from Simon Støvring and Ricky Mondello. So far, so good. 👌

Looks like we’re gonna be New Yorkers for a bit…we bought our own piece of the Adirondacks! 😁 📷

Why my internet presence has been quiet this past week:

A Gaia GPS satellite map view of a trek totaling 62+ miles in distance with 9000+ feet of elevation over 32 hours of travel time.

🆕📝 7 Things This Week [#106]

So, I’ve been doing more tweaking to the Hello theme on my Micro.blog, but I feel a bit uncomfortable just editing the code in the browser. I got hosed once by updating the theme and losing all my changes. What are people doing for version control? Git’s kinda overwhelming.

I’m heading out into the woods tomorrow for a multiday trip and am wondering if I should update to Public Beta 2 from Beta 1. Does anyone with experience know if battery life is better, worse, or the same on B2?

🆕📝 ‘Google’s Reading Mode app for Android can save you from the worst of web design’

Based on The Verge’s description, Google is very close to nailing the reading/listening experience across its OS.

🆕📝 Alt Text Is (Maybe) Enabled on Threads

Threads’ alt text implementation could turn out to be the best yet, if only we could all try it.

Second Shortcuts commission done. 💪 That was a tricky one.

And with the flurry of posts today, July 2023 has become my most prolific month on HeyDingus. And still I have so much that I haven’t found time to write!

🆕📝 Quick Tip: Get Visual Narration Anywhere There’s Text

There’s a narrator living in your phone, just waiting to be called upon.

🆕📝 ‘The past is not true’

You can’t change the past, but maybe the past isn’t quite what you thought it was anyway.

There are two neighbor children here, whose names I don’t know, that I always think of as Walker and Texas Ranger.

A child saying, “Chip, I’m all jacked up on Mountain Dew.”

You learn (see?) something new everyday. Today it was two things. First, pricker weed taller than me. Second, a Tesla Model 3 towing a camper. Wish I got pics.

🆕📝 7 Things This Week [#105]

For the Micro.blog fans: I just released version 1.0 of the ‘Open Micro.blog Reply’ shortcut! Get it here from the HeyDingus Shortcuts Library.

Ever have trouble getting back to the conversation from a reply you made that’s on your Micro.blog site? This shortcut will bring you right there!

Alex Cranz:

But the real reason we have to stop calling microblog posts tweets isn’t because the microblog itself is slowly shedding its micro or because X is changing the Tweet button. We have to stop using it because I’ve really tried for the last few weeks since I called for us all to call them tweets and it sucked. “Hey did you see that Thread tweet” sounds sillier than “hey did you see that Thread post” when its a 500-character screed about someone’s Diablo IV build. Ditto for “Can you believe what that lady tweeted on Mastodon?”

Vindicated. 💪

I’d really prefer for my header menu to not have this weird in-between phase where the items make a second row.

Narrow window with 6 menu items on two rows.

If the window is too narrow for them to be on one row, I just want it to collapse into this hamburger dropdown. Any CSS magicians out there who can help me out?
