Apple TV+ is coming out with an adaptation of ‘The Velveteen Rabbit’ starring, [checks notes] Helena Bonham Carter? Consider me intrigued!

Please, Expose your RSS 🔗

Earlier this week I had a need to manually find a bunch of people’s RSS feed links. It seemed simple enough: go to their website and look for an RSS/Subscribe link but I was surprised to find that a lot of people don’t have a link anywhere to their feed.

Even if people only ever add your website into their feed reader and let the app find the RSS feed (see below for more info on this), showing an RSS link reminds people that RSS exists, a win for the open web.

Hear, hear! I’ll raise you a ‘Subscribe’ or a ‘Feeds’ page that describes what each one contains.

Greg Morris - Just Don’t Remove The Function Keys 🔗

Honestly, I think it’s a shame that poor implementation ruined a semi-good idea. Apple clearly thought that this was going to catch on because the life span indicates so. […] The design and production of the Touch Bar would make a great story, one we will continue to talk about for years to come. I can only dream of what would have been had they just put it above the function keys instead.

I, too, can’t shake the idea that the Touch Bar would have been a beloved hit had they included it with the function keys rather than in place of them.

🆕📝 The iMac Pro will not rise phoenix-like from the ashes after all. Maybe.

Apple never does something until it does do it. But they are saying they won’t. Uh, got it?

The day was August 25, 2023 when the Apple empire made its move against the @MacStories@MacStories.net rebels, and none of us noticed: https://www.apple.com/newsroom/apple-stories/

Apple’s Newroom page with annotations calling out the new ‘Apple Stories’ category of posts there.

Hello nice to meet you, what do you do for a living | Meadow 🌱

But is it actually the best question that we can ask? What does it tell about our society that our go-to question when we’re getting to know someone is to ask them what do they work on.

I questioned this very thing many years ago and switched to asking, “What sorts of things do you like to do?” and, “What are you most proud of lately?” They’ve proved to be great conversation starters.

Ideally, someone’s work would be something they like and are proud of, but it’s not always. What people do “for fun” usually gives better insight.

I’m in the market for a HomeKit-capable space heater for our bedroom (read: fairly small and quiet). Anyone out there have one that they particularly like?

Regarding @Denny’s plea for a more diverse and “full range” Micro.blog:

Micro.blog feels like a community of 50 users. While the human curated Discovery timeline sometimes does feel like a feature and a benefit it’s also true that it might be biased by the curators which is only three people. Regular users don’t have access to the full timeline. I feel like a child being babysat and over protected.)

I don’t feel the same desire for a more chaotic timeline. If I wanted to see something different, I’d follow more/different users from across the social web (or just go for a full Mastodon account). But I do see value in an option to see the “firehose” full timeline as a release valve for the limited discovery features here.

Alright, I’ve done it. Voting with my dollars and downgraded our Netflix plan in a 🖕 to their price increase. Not much of a 🖕 though, since they’ll still be getting $15.49 out of me every month. But we’ll save $4.50 from what we’re paying now, and $7.50/month off what it would have gone up to.

🆕📝 Duel of the Defaults!: Jarrod Enters the Ring

I present my defaults as a challenge to the reigning Mr. Default. Inspired by @hemisphericviews@social.lol.

Are you an aspiring Puzzmonaut? I just got in, and now I’ve got this link to share. Solve today’s puzzle there and you’re guaranteed an entry key, even though all the public keys are gone for today. The link expires around midnight ET, so you’ve only got an hour-ish to solve it.

Get puzzling!

I just released version 2.3 of the ‘De-News’ shortcut:

Due to a bug with the ‘Share’ action hanging and then silently failing, I added a new menu at the end to choose to either copy the article’s web URL or share it with the share sheet. I recommend ‘Copy’ option until Apple fixes the ‘Share’ action. (Thanks @rdelrossi@opalstack.social!)

Get it here from the HeyDingus Shortcuts Library.

Aw hell yeah! Can’t wait!

In addition to playing videos in-app, the macOS app will also get the ability to play in a new separate window.

Play 2.0 is going to be great!

Taylor Tomlinson to Host New CBS Late-Night Show after ‘Colbert’ - The New York Times

In a shake-up of the late-night television landscape, the stand-up comic Taylor Tomlinson, 29, will take over the time slot after “The Late Show With Stephen Colbert” on CBS. The move makes her not just the only woman in the job on a late-night show on network television now, but also the youngest by two decades.

Very cool! I love seeing people my age killing it out there. What a start; she’s got a long, long runway of a career ahead of her.

Welp, I can tell you that setting up a replacement iPhone from scratch, downloading all the necessary apps, logging in, and rearranging my home screens takes about four hours. 😴 That’s about three hours longer than I expected, but at least I’m up and running and won’t need to skip a beat tomorrow.

Two iPhones on a desk showing setup screens.

Over a million children in schools where guns have been confiscated? Good god, that’s terrifying. They’ve gotta go.

Modern landfill technology – Mike Crittenden

That 👆 whole post is about how there’s a pretty good chance that any recycled plastic will end up in the ocean, and throwing plastic in the trash is usually more sustainable than recycling it.

🫣 Oh no, don’t tell me that! It feels like ‘gotchas’ all the way down these days. Here’s the linked post that Critter is referring to.

‼️📚 A new Kingkiller Chronicle! It’s not the ever-elusive Book 3, but it’s sure to whet the appetite. The Narrow Road Between Desires:

From dawn to midnight over the course of a single day, follow the Kingkiller Chronicle’s most charming fae as he schemes and sneaks, dancing into trouble and back out again with uncanny grace.

The Narrow Road Between Desires is Bast’s story. In it he traces the old ways of making and breaking, following his heart even when doing so goes against his better judgement.

After all, what good is caution if it keeps him from danger and delight?

For an Internet-first bank, SoFi’s iOS app user experience is pretty garbage. It’s slower than my old regional bank’s, dark mode is inconsistently implemented, it takes many taps to get around, and it’s full of ad-like feature promos. The actual banking is good so I’m sticking around, but my word.

If a year had 13 months – Mike Crittenden

Every year has 13 months and every month has exactly 28 days The extra month is called “Sol” and it comes between June and July Every month begins on a Sunday and ends on a Saturday That means that “the 17th” for example is always a Tuesday, regardless of month or year.

The Type-A personality in me wants this so very badly.

I still think that POSSE has it right

I want to make it easy for me to write— so I write in one place. I want to make it easy for people to read— so I let my feed syndicate as widely as is feasible.

I’ve seen lots of folks with takes I just don’t get when it comes to syndicating posts. Mostly around some idea of implied reciprocity or presence, as though the idea of “bots” or “websites” versus “people” accounts haven’t been around for a long time. I don’t really get it myself.

I think @jsonbecker has it right.

Timeline read position syncing can’t come soon enough for Micro.blog. It pains me every single day.

Netflix’s ad-supported plan will reward binge watchers with ad-free episodes - The Verge

Netflix will soon start cutting down on commercials if you’re on a binge-watching kick. Starting at the beginning of next year, the streamer will toss in an ad-free episode after you’ve watched three episodes in a row.

This is kinda gross, but also a savvy idea. Will it affect usage patterns? I’m inclined to say yes. Netflix wouldn’t offer this if it didn’t help juice their numbers.

Trying continues to be the best show on Apple TV+. Yup, better than Severance. Better than Ted Lasso. It’s great, and if you haven’t watched it yet, you’re in for a (3 season!) treat. I started a rewatch, and I laughed just as much as the first time. It’s incredibly solid, heartwarming, and funny.

It’s pretty cool to see this credit card design used on the website of the bank launching with Tap to Pay on iPhone in Ukraine. Looks like an Apple-commissioned photo to me. (Via MacRumors)

Yellow credit card with the phrase “Be Brave Like Ukraine” on it, tapping to pay on an iPhone.
