š I moved from my self hosted Mastodon instance to a micro.blog account // Rach Smith
I recently learnt that micro.blog accounts can federate with Mastodon, so I decided to try it. It only costs $5 USD/month and creates no sysadmin/ops work for me. I am technically storing my data with āsomeone elseā, which is what I was trying to avoid by running my instance, but the company seems like a small group of people trying to make a product people like, and as someone who works in a small group of people who trying to make a product people like⦠that appeals to me.
@jarrod Iāve been enjoying Rachās blog since Matthias Ott mentioned her on his newsletter. The lack of likes etc. and in turn the (IMO) poor discovery on M.b is what ended up pushing me off the platform.
If I ever leave Fosstodon, Iād go with social.lol I think. I like that itās a paid service, so itās funded from the off.
@kev Thatās where I discovered @rachsmith too! Her site is incredible and I, obviously, like her writing as well.
Social.lol seems like it works for a lot of people. Iāve been interested, but not seriously tempted, by it. Itās a cool product and you get so much for so little cost. Discovery might not be the same as on other platforms, but Iām still finding 2-3 new people to follow every week via replies, blog About pages, and the Discover page.
I used to miss the likes and reposts, but now I really donāt. They were so distracting over on Threads that I turned off those notifications! Maybe Iāve drunk the Kool-Aid, but Iām super happy with MB as a social network. Iām so glad there are different ways for the same people to interact together.
@jarrod I do prefer to have likes as I tend to use them as a passive acknowledgement, rather than having to comment. Boosts I turn off though as I really dislike them.
For discovery I tend to use hashtags, something else that Micro obviously doesnāt support. Glad it works for you though.
