Does anyone know of an ‘Open in Apple News’ extension or something? Or a URL scheme to open a link in News? I have News+ so there are articles like @joannastern@mastodon.world’s columns that are paywalled on the web but I could read in full in the app. Right now I search for the title in the app.

I’ve tried building a shortcut, but haven’t found the right tools yet.
Turns out this does exist on iOS but you have to open the article in Safari-proper first. The extension doesn’t show up in Safari web views in other apps.
(You might have to add it from the ‘More’ menu if you don’t see it in Safari.)
@jarrod I’ve been tripped up on this nearly every time I try to use it. I usually come across articles I want to read in web views within other apps, and I forget to open in Safari before looking for News in the share sheet.
@jarrod here ya go…
@mako I’ve tried that method before too, but it’s pretty hit or miss for me (example). Do you find it works consistently?
@jarrod weird; it’s generally worked pretty well for me. Have you tried something like this (I go back and forth on which method is better): https://apps.apple.com/us/app/opener-open-links-in-apps/id989565871
@mako I’ve used Opener for other stuff, but couldn’t get it to work with Apple News either. Have you? Maybe there’s something weird happening on my end.
@jarrod well, the only thing I know is not “all” articles from some sources, like WSJ are on Apple News. Maybe that’s what’s going on? Personally found the shortcut route usually most reliable, but every once in a while, the article just isn’t there.
Opener is a mixed bag too.
@mako Maybe? But the one I’m testing on (and that I think worked once before it stopped working) is on Apple News.

News: apple.news/A7HSGXXxP…
Maybe you could try that one on your end?
@jarrod yeah, doesn’t work for me either. But that Apple url looks suspicious.. wonder if there’s just a way to encode the original url to that.
@jarrod perhaps a clue: https://github.com/Robindiddams/unapplenews
@jarrod the only way I can get it to open properly in Apple news is to use the built-in Open in News part of the share sheet
@jarrod in my last attempt, I decided to install Proxyman and watch the traffic when you press “open in news”, but still can’t see how it’s working. I guess just throwing “applenews://“ in front doesn’t really work liked it used to.
@mako Something weird for sure. That’s all that seems to happen when I use the shortcut too. It just opens Apple News and does nothing with the URL.
