My only Prime Day purchase was this pair of Crocs, which I’ve been meaning to buy for weeks anyway. My last (off-brand Walmart) Crocs have lasted me at least a decade.

🆕📝 Shortcuts Tips: Using ‘Show Alert’ for More Flexibility

It’s a doubleheader sort of day, so here’s a ‘Show Alert’ tip to go with the ‘Show Result’ one.

I’ve been patient, but now it’s beta time. Here we go! 😎

🆕📝 Shortcuts Tips: Use ‘Show Result’ for Troubleshooting

In which I enthusiastically share my belated discovery with the world.

These posts from @lexfri@hachyderm.io and @matt@isfeeling.social scurried through time and space, wires and waves, destined to arrive together in my timeline. 🤣

Two social media posts right next to each other, one joking about missing the true meaning of Prime Day, the other wishing to see fewer Prime Day posts.

Most of my ChatGPT usage lately has been to satiate my tip-of-the-tongue phenomenon and double-check infrequently used phrases. Most people probably just type these into Google, but, frankly, ChatGPT excels here.

A conversation in which I vaguely ask about the correct way to use “modus operandi”, and ChatGPT provides a concise explanation including that it’s abbreviated as “M.O.”

Horray! ‘The Afterparty’, one of of my favorite TV+ shows, is back!

It reminded me of that time I was (one of?) the first to report that Apple had posted the show’s pilot to YouTube – something they’re experimenting with other platforms these days.

Since when has the ‘Show Result’ action in Shortcuts provided a cancel button? I’ve been using ‘Show Alert’ like a fool for too long so I can stop the shortcut while testing.

A result being shown mid shortcut, with both a ‘cancel’ and a ‘done’ button.

Not to be too, ahem, centralized on Threads, it looks like the App Store is pointing folks toward Mastodon. I thought perhaps we’d gotten a glimpse of an ever-elusive author for one of these stories, but nope. Apple wields their secrecy with discipline. 🤫

App Store story explaining Mastodon, and mentioning the @ali.anwar@mastodon.social account. Later, a search for that account results in no user found.

For simplicity and consistency with Mastodon and Threads, I wonder if it’s time to reconsider upping Micro.blog’s character limit from 300 to 500. @manton and @jean (or anyone), what do you think?

I’m kind of leaning into the Threads algorithm by following way more accounts than on other social networks. See someone’s post that I like? Followed! If it’s going to show me random stuff anyway, I might as well tune it more to my liking. Micro.blog is where I follow folks who I don’t want to miss.

I, once again, stayed up way too late making shortcuts for the library. It’s always fun, but definitely time for sleep now. Will share them tomorrow. 😴 (Posted using one of said shortcuts.)

🆕📝 It’s a Prime Day to Try an Indie App

I know you’re already at your maximum for shopping event alerts, but you’ll kick yourself if you don’t check out this list of amazing deals for apps made by indie developers.

Proof that there are still good exchanges on the internet: microblog.pratikmhatre.com/2023/07/1…

This back and forth made me smile. 🙂

🆕📝 Kyle Bradshaw: ‘Threads readies handy explainer of Mastodon and the fediverse’

I’m starting a “nuke and pave” (erase and restore to factory settings and set up as new) of my Mac mini. Wish me luck. 🤞

In honor of the App Store’s 15th anniversary, here are the first 15 apps I ever downloaded (inspired by @basicappleguy@mastodon.social). So sad I wasn’t there on Day 1. In fact, I’m pretty sure I didn’t even have an iPhone OS compatible device. I think I just downloaded these from iTunes in preparation.🤓

App Store purchased page full of very old apps downloaded on August 25, 2008.

🆕📝 Demystifying RSS and Other Subscriptions With a /Feeds Page

I just finished my first Shortcuts commission! 🤩 It was pretty cool to work on a shortcut specifically for someone else. Luckily they use my same blogging platform (Blot), so I had a head start on how it should work. If you have something you want to automate on your Apple devices, give me a shout!
