🔗 Maybe I’m Not a Pro Anymore // Brendon Bigley // macstories.net

It occurred to me watching today’s presentation that this is the first year where the iPhone’s Pro models feel like they were actually made for professionals. The “extras” Allison is referring to used to be the marquee features of the newest lineup — the Dynamic Island, the Action button, etc — but are now seriously professional features. The latest additions and the reasoning behind their inclusion all felt completely alien to me.

I felt this too. I’m glad for others to use them, but many “Pro” features are likely lost on me.

🔗 iOS 18 RC adds the ability to pause video recordings in the Camera app // Jeff Benjamin // 9to5mac.com

This feature opens up a few creative possibilities, but the most obvious use case is the ability to create simple jump cuts within the same video, eliminating the need to edit the cuts together in post. By pausing a video and changing the framing, you’re performing the edit during the shoot instead of in post. This could significantly speed up turnaround time for rough videos shot using iOS 18’s default Camera app.

Ooh, nice!

🆕📝 First Thoughts on ‘It’s Glowtime’

I'll probably watch it again to see what I missed, but here's my first impression. TL;DR: It was a fun Apple Event with thinner, lighter, better gadgets. Nothing "blowaway" — except perhaps some sweet health features — but pretty good iterations overall.

Hold up, gotta go pre-order some AirPods. I’m so intrigued by their no-ear-tips-but-still-noise-cancelation magic. 🎧

I can’t wait to see more photos of the new “The Observatory” at Apple Park from folks there today. Their architecture is so beautiful and timeless. Hoping we’ll get some analysis from @michaelsteeber@mastodon.social too! I like that we see the campus grow every few years. (Via MacStories)

New friends, new climbs, and mega fun at the Rumney Craggin’ Classic this weekend, put on by the @americanalpine! 📷

People wearing helmets smile and pose while preparing for rock climbing in a shaded forest area with rocky terrain ropes and climbing gear scattered on the ground. Rock climbers scale a tall cliff with several people on the ground watching and belaying each other in a forested area under a bright blue sky. Camping gear and bedding lie inside an illuminated tent. String lights hang from the center, creating a cozy, warm atmosphere suitable for nighttime. Two climbers are smiling and gearing up at a cliff edge wearing helmets and harnesses amidst a lush green forest with a few houses visible in the background. 🔗 How to Get Lots of Internet Points // Lou Plummer // louplummer.lol

My technique for getting Internet points through blogging is to try my best to be interesting and prolific. I want to meet real people and have real conversations. I like it when I write something that is measurably popular because it increases the chances of those things happening. I also take pride in writing what I hope are helpful technical articles with the hope of helping someone find a useful tool or technique that makes their work easier.

I saw two different rainbows on my drive home today! (Three if you count the double rainbow) 🌈 📷

A faint rainbow appearing after rain in a shopping area parking lot with trees in the background traffic lights ahead and a person walking near a brick building adorned with a “COMING SOON” sign A vibrant rainbow arches over a large red barn with twin cupolas situated amidst lush green hills under a cloudy sky adjacent to a road with yellow dividing lines.

Remember when we heard about the rumor that Shortcuts was going to get a natural language-based editor? That hasn’t appeared in the Shortcuts app itself, but it’s kinda what Apple Intelligence is going to be once Siri and App Intents are pieced together into it. 🤓

🔗 How writing can help you solve problems // Eric Gregorich // blog.ericgregorich.com

As we write out the potential options to solve the problem, we typically eliminate specific options based on what we know about the situation. Perhaps it is a budget issue or an infrastructure limitation. The more we can get down on paper (digital or analog) the more likely we are to come up with the best options.

Yup. Slowing down and thinking through things logically to get them on the page helps me to organize and solidify my thoughts.

It’s not done yet, but I’ve got a fresh design going at heydingus.net. You’ll see what’s new if you click into a specific page or post, like here! There’s tweaking to do, but I’m excited about where it’s going. Let me know if you see any weirdness. (And check it out on different screen sizes! 😉)

When, exactly, did reading become about quick digestion instead of deep reflection? When did we stop savoring beautifully crafted sentences, inhaling their ephemeral essence? What happened to the celebration of beautiful prose? When did practicality overshadow our appreciation for writing as an art form, rather than merely a tool for sales? When did we sell ourselves to the corporate machine, diluting our language to attract those who have no time? The answer to all these questions, it seems, is this: “It was all for the money.”

Gruber was right, this George Clooney and Brad Pitt interview with GQ is a good read.

🆕📝 Gratitude Comes From the Top

An illuminating show of character from Steve Jobs back in the day could be instructional to Apple today.

🔗 Please please please please please please share your big dumb beautiful self with the world // Keenan // gkeenan.co

Creativity is how we make sense of the world around us. We only have one you and one chance to know the world you know.

Is this getting a little too “live, laugh, love”? Fuck it. Embrace the cringe. Stop blowing out your own candle. You know whose opinion about your art is more important than just making it?

Fucking no one’s.
