I love the new goal arc in Pedometer++. It’s a good reference to the Apple Watch’s fitness rings, but distinct and easier to fit onscreen. But what I like most is the visual of effort required to complete your goal. It’s hard to get started (going “uphill” on the arc) but once you get halfway, you might as well ride the downhill to the finish!

To start with the home screen has been clarified to be more legible at a glance. With some incredibly fun (to use and to make) animations to celebrate when you reach your goal.

Last weekend, I had the pleasure of starting a new journey with Todd: the Northeast Ultra 8. After completing his winter 46ers, Todd wanted a new challenge, and the @northeast_ultra8 is it. 8 of the most challenging through hikes in the Northeast, each done within 24 hours. Our first, the Taconic Crest Trail, stretches ~38 miles across New York, Massachusetts, and Vermont with ~8000 feet of elevation gain (depending on who you ask) and we got it done in 16.5 hours.

We encountered rain, wind, fog, sun, porcupine, cow, deer, mouse, bear(!), countless PUDs (pointless ups and downs), and (still) some snow. 😅 We even got some views since the tree cover hasn’t come in yet! It was a grand day covering tons of terrain with a good friend, and it clued us into what we’re up against with the rest of the hikes.

The Devil’s Path is up next in May! Can’t wait. 💪

She did it! Three years in the making and after thwarted winter attempts, Karen summited Catamount Mountain to complete her winter round of the @lakeplacid9er challenge! 🥳 🏔️ Fresh snow helped a ton to cover the glare ice underneath, but our spikes were definitely needed from bottom to top. We lucked out with great views, sun, and no wind! The clouds held off until we were descending. Well done, Karen, your joyful outlook made the day great!

We were the first at the trailhead, so we had the pleasure of breaking trail through knee deep snow all the way way to the summit. Still, it was a stunning day in the mountains, and with careful precautions, the dropping wind chill was manageable. Only 6 left!

Huge day yesterday! Pre-dawn uphill ski at Whiteface with Sarah and Dan, followed by super fun climbing on Multi Gully with Lizzo. One of my favorite ADK multipitch ice routes! Rounded out the evening with a bunch of hours with the rad crew of @adkclimb.club on Poke-O-Moonshine’s steep and long Waterfall routes. What a privilege to be outside all day doing cool things with cool people. 😁

A wild day up in the High Peaks! Todd nabbed his 38th and 39th winter summits on Gothics and Saddleback. You really can’t overstate how different those two peaks are. Gothics was steep, exposed, and mega windy — almost blew out packs off the mountain! We opted for a roped descent through the steepest and iciest bit. Saddleback was a cakewalk with consistent slope and powdery snow by comparison! But Todd did awesome. Every ascent is unique!

Another fine day spent in the mountains assisting someone on their winter 46er journey. Today, Julie and I tackled Seward Mountain after we turned around on it last week. This time, we enjoyed bluebird skies, bright sun, fresh snow, and single-digit temps In other words, a winter wonderland! We got it done in under 11 hours, and thoroughly enjoyed every minute, including pushing through all those thick branches and deep snow up top! 😁

Tom couldn’t stay out of the high peaks for long! Though he completed his 46ers in November, he returned for a second chance at the Phelps’ summit view. So glad this last-minute booking came together! Helping expand @maxwellmortillaro and @phil_dworzanski’s backcountry ski touring repertoire was a total joy! And we saw some real progress as they mastered heading up and down the steep and tight terrain.

We made our way up Wright Peak from the Loj via the Old Marcy Dam trail and Wright Ski Trail. The rocky hiking trail and bottom section of the ski trail made for some exciting dodge, duck, dip, dive and dodging. But mega fun up top! Great temps too — way nicer on Wright than yesterday! 😁

We love helping dreams come to life! @haojjiang and Junlin had backpacked together before, but never in the winter and never in Adirondacks. Their goal was to test their skills in a winter mountaineering excursion. Gothics Mountain provided sub-zero temps and waist-deep snow for the challenge, and they crushed it! We ate, slept, laughed, and awed in nature’s stunning beauty. In short, we thrived. Can’t wait to get out with these two again!

He did it! In only 18 months, and just a few weeks shy of his 70th birthday, Tom Sagers became the newest Adirondack 46er by summiting Seymour Mountain! Tom and I hiked 42 of the 46 high peaks together, and in that time, I have come to know him as a capable, enthusiastic, and dedicated hiker — and as a friend. It’s been incredible to see his skills progress over that time, and we battled some pretty challenging conditions together. 🏔️

If I can still handle hiking these peaks in icy conditions at Tom’s age, I’ll consider myself quite fortunate indeed. 💪

A rough estimate of what it takes to become a 46er is 300+ miles and 70,000+ feet in elevation gain worth of hiking these unforgiving “trails”. Please join me in congratulating Tom on this monumental achievement! 👏

Winter conditions on Colvin and Blake today for Tom’s 46/46! We did Colvin earlier this year, so that was a repeat peak, but Blake was new for him. Wind and snow made it feel very real up there, but trail conditions were much more forgiving than our last few hikes. 14 miles, 4000’ elevation gain, 11 hours. ONE PEAK LEFT!!

Cliff & Redfield packed a punch for Tom’s 43rd and 44th high peaks. More snow AND more water made conditions quite challenging in both the low and high elevations. Getting to the Uphill Lean-to from the Loj via Lake Arnold and the floating logs took about 5.5 hours, then up and down Redfield (nice views, and snow 6-inches deep!) in about 3.5 hours, and Cliff (the cliffs weren’t too icy yet) in about 2.5 hours. About 6 hours for the return hike in headlamps (incredible full moon!) put us at around 17.5 hours of constant movement — our longest yet. We head into the mountains to test ourselves, and Tom continues to impress!

Just two peaks left on his #46er journey: Blake and Seymour. Thankfully, both should be shorter days.

18 miles and about 5,000 feet of elevation gain. 😅 Tom proved his mettle on this hike through snow and lots of ice. We broke trail up Gray, experienced otherworldly views on Skylight, and incredible cloud inversion on Marcy. A very memorable day for Tom’s 41st and 42nd high peaks. Only 4 left!

The new Apple TV animation (or “mnemonic”) is cool, though it doesn’t feel nearly as timeless as the original. The accompanying audio, credited(!) to FINNEAS, is pleasant and ethereal. But the original (Mac startup chime-inspired) thrum was perfect and I’ll miss it. Here’s a comparison.

For our longest hike together yet, Tom and I tackled Haystack and Basin. Each are around 4900’ and have steep, challenging sections — made trickier with a good amount of ice above 4000’! But they were absolutely worth it for the amazing views we were blessed with as the skies cleared. ☀️

Layering is difficult this time of year as temperatures vary greatly between sun and shade, and trees go from frozen to dripping. So with 15 hours on the trail, and many layer changes along the way, we got Tom into the 40s for his high peak count. Hard to believe he only has six left! 🏔️

(Congrats to the fella who was celebrating his 46/46 summit as we arrived on Haystack! 🙌)

It took us a couple attempts, but we got the Santanoni Range done bringing Tom’s high peak count to 38/46! We did Panther on Friday, but rainy and freezing conditions prevented us from feeling good about going for the full range. We returned on Sunday with full winter gear in tow and summited Santanoni & Couchsachraga in a 14-hour push. Next up, Haystack & Basin. 🥾

These early winter conditions can be some of the most difficult to deal with, as you’re faced with ice, snow, and wet mud all at the same time. Tom is an inspiration — if you’re ever hiked the Santas, you’ll know how impressive it is for him to be out there at 69 years old! 💪

A better way to pull your rap cord

One helpful tip I’ve learned from painful experience over the years is how valuable it is to bring a hand ascender whenever I do long rappels with a pull/rap cord. Instead of wrapping the cord around your hand, suffering through rope burn, or messing with a wrapped carabiner, the ascender is worth its weight in gold for efficiency and comfort in getting your rope down. It firmly grabs the rope and gives you a nice big handle to pull down more ergonomically.

Plus, you’ll start to identify other great uses for the ascender, like more easily pulling slack or giving yourself some mechanical advantage with a GriGri when belaying from the bottom.

Oh, and don’t forget your gloves!

Yesterday was a perfect day to visit the top of New York State! Andrew visited from Toronto on his east coast tour, and, despite having never been up a mountain before (let alone one in the ADK) made a blistering hike up to the summit of NY’s tallest peak in under 4 hours. And that was with dodging ice that’s now on the trail near the top. We rested on top, enjoying the splendidly clear and sunny view, and chatted with fine folk also out for a hike — including a couple working on their 50 state high points, of which Mt. Marcy was their 47th! They’ll finish up in Vermont, New Hampshire, and Maine in the next few days.

Big thanks to Andrew for the delightful conversation and joy of just being in the mountains. Hope to see you back in the winter!

Today was a special day guiding Fern and Kevin up the classic Pete’s Farewell (5.7) on Pitchoff. Why? It’s their honeymoon! 😍 It’s wonderful to see partners in climbing be partners in life — full of encouragement and support. Back to the Seward Range for our group backpacking trip this week! Jess and Jeff joined us to get all four peaks done in one go — Seward, Donaldson, Emmons, and then Seymour. We adapted our plan due to the forecasted rain, opting to stay in the Ward Brook lean-to. That meant for a longer Day 1 doing the SDE loop, but then we were able to knock out Seymour early on Day 2 and avoid most of the rain. Big kudos to Jess and Jeff for being flexible and up for the challenge. We worked well as a team to get them done, and marveled at the stunning fall foliage. (Extra props to Jeff as these were his first #46er high peaks!)

Tom and I spent a few days on the trail last week, plugging away at his remaining ADK high peaks. We summited Sawteeth on a gorgeous day for 30/46, and then cruised through the three peaks of the Seward range to bring his total to 33/46. It’s the best time of year for hiking here in the Adirondacks!

Jules has attended summer camp in Old Forge the past few summers and got bit by the #46er bug. He and his dad booked us for a 2-day backpacking trip in which we knocked out three more peaks: Big Slide and the Wolfjaws, with Yard Mountain tossed in for good measure. It was so cool to help them dial in their hiking and camping skills, and we shared so many stories, riddles, and brain teasers on the trail. These two aspiring 46ers are well on their way!

Every hiker’s journey is different, so although this was the second #46er finish I was part of this week, it was totally unique! Jim started his 46er challenge years ago with a friend, but when they couldn’t do it this summer, his daughter @imjessicakahler stepped up!

Getting to spend so much time with them was a blast, and on this trip we enjoyed awesome weather, tasty food, and even of the lean-to we wanted. Conditions on Skylight were just amazing, and two others were celebrating their 46er completion at the same time. Wild!

Congrats, Jim. It’s been a challenge, but you found yourself equal to it.

The Sparks family really packed in a full day at King Philip Spring Wall for their first time climbing outdoors together! We climbed on three different walls, practiced a bunch of new techniques, did a primer on top rope anchors, and got in a gorgeous rappel!

The whole family had a blast, and it was another gorgeous early autumn day with the crag all to ourselves. #Sendtember is just around the corner!

It’s a truly special day when someone finishes their 46er journey. Maigann certainly put in the effort with a final push of 45+ miles over three days to complete Allen (go get it now, conditions are ideal!), Sawteeth, and Lower & Upper Wolfjaw.

Enjoyed a grand adventure yesterday with @jmhaas73 checking out the South Face of Gothics and climbing the Original Route. Getting in and out is bushwacky, but the climbing is pure fun. What it lacks in difficulty, it more than makes up for with its spectacular setting. Can’t wait to go back and do more there!

Sarah visited us from Vegas and Red Rocks for two laps up and down the Chapel Pond Slab. She brought the sun with her for a beautiful day of rock climbing! We ticked about 9 pitches over two classics, Regular Route (5.5) and Empress (5.5), for Sarah’s biggest day out in 15 years. 🤘 Finding shady belays might have been the crux of the day! 😜

We chatted about rope management, anchor building, and the overlap of the climbing and canyoneering worlds. And we shared a mutual love for Tri-cams. 😁

Our 3-day backpacking trip to summit Cliff & Redfield was a super success! Jim has had a few years off hiking high peaks, but he’s determined to become a #46er this summer with only 3 peaks left now that we’ve crossed off the formidable Cliff and Redfield! And to do them with his daughter, @imjessicakahler (peaks 10 and 11 for her!), is something special. We enjoyed two picturesque nights at Lake Colden, and as ideal trail conditions as you can expect for the ADK. There were many challenges — we had to doctor up both of Jess’ boots! — but found ourselves up to the task. Can’t wait for our next ones!

A superb day to be above Chapel Pond on Tilman’s Arete. Today, Aurelia took a big step in her climbing career by proving she’s competent belayer for both top rope and lead. They survived!! Kudos to @raybanmeta on their glasses being surprisingly rugged. Mine took a 30-meter (~100-foot) tumble down a rock face when I was out guiding a multi-pitch rock climb. (Totally my fault, I perched them on my shirt collar and then leaned over the edge.) Neither lens was damaged, and after a little rest and recharge in their case, they work perfectly fine!

BTW, these are my secret weapon for capturing awesome moments while my guests are climbing, all while keeping my hands safely on their rope. And you get a copy of all the shots when you book an adventure with @onwardguides.

This looks so cool!! Magic Move from Keynote has really grown up.

Do yourself a favor and turn on Debug > ”Slow Animations” in an iOS 26 simulator and then bounce around within an app. It really lets you get a sense of the fun merging effects they are doing with Toolbars and generally how so much "life" the system is imbued with.
The way the glass droplets combine and separate is gorgeous.

Giant Mountain via the Ridge Trail - 6/6/25

Today was Day 2 with @sekoshan as she prepares for a long hike down in Peru. I guided her up Giant Mountain along the Ridge Trail today. Compared to yesterday, today was far more humid, wet, and cloudy. But we still had a great time on the trail!

5.8 miles, 3000 ft of elevation gain, 6 hours car-to-car.

No warm-up like we had yesterday on Colden! This trail is steep from the beginning, rising 600 feet in the first .5 miles to a lookout. You do nearly 1000 feet of elevation gain for each of the 3 miles to the summit, popping in and out of the woods onto the rocky ridges. It’s one of my favorite routes because you get views all the way up!

The trail was in superb condition on the way up. Mud and blowdown was basically a non-issue. We were way more wet from sweating in the muggy weather than any water/mud on the trail.

Clouds rolled in just as we were reaching the summit, but we got a short window view down into the valley before getting socked in. We knew rain was imminent and that the descent would be harder on wet rock, we opted not to continue to Rocky Peak Ridge, saving our legs for the McIntyre Range tomorrow.

Rain did indeed start coming down about halfway back to the car. It soaked the rock quickly, and we took our time to avoid slipping. Rain coats went on to avoid getting chilly and it was quite pleasant.

Bugs were out, but not too bad. Some swarms knew the summit, but nothing a little bug spray couldn’t handle. The mosquitos kept biting through the rain.

We saw 17 people on the trail, with a few still headed up as we were coming down.

9:00am - Roaring Brook/Ridge Trail Crossover
9:45am - Giant Summit (3 hours)
10:15am - Left the summit
11:00am - Roaring Brook/Ridge Trail Crossover

Colden from Loj, 6/5/25

I had the pleasure of guiding Shannon and Susan up Colden yesterday from the Loj. We had a splendid day with great views despite Canadian wildfire smoke, and the rain even held off for us!

We opted to do it as an out-and-back via the Lake Arnold Trail. ~13 miles, 2734 ft of vert, 10 hours car-to-car.

Trails were in really good condition — some of the best I’ve seen for this hike. Basically no blowdown left, and even the trail near Lake Arnold wasn’t as muddy as usual. Some slick rock near the summit was our only challenge, and only when coming down.

Trails were quiet for most of the day. We saw two people headed out to Skylight, and another couple we leap frogged with up and down Colden. Once returning, more groups were headed to the Avalanche Campsites and Marcy Dam.

These three peaks provide lots of technical challenge. Steep climbs, exposed rock faces, and lots of winter blowdown. But the incredible views from the heart of the lower great range made it all totally worthwhile. It’s amazing what our bodies can do with a little gumption! I had the pleasure of guiding Bill and Bev up Mt. Marcy for them to reach the top of New York State for their high point journey! We lucked out with incredible weather with spectacular views clear across to Vermont. Bill regaled us with tales of their climbs across the world. He and Bev are so impressive and dedicated, showing us how it’s done into their 70s. I can’t wait to hear about their next adventures, including Mont Blanc this fall. Wow!

Tom and I nabbed the rest of the Dix Range (Dix and Hough) yesterday to tick his 27th and 28th high peaks! The weather was glorious, though the black flies are officially out in full force. But even those little buggers couldn’t keep the smiles off our faces as we traversed that gorgeous range. We summited via the Beckhorn trail and then went down Lillian Brook for a 12.5 mile day in just about 11 hours.

Big thanks to Curt, a volunteer herd path maintainer who we met on top of Hough and who was continuing to clear the significant blowdown in the range!

We wrapped up April and kicked off May with 3 more summits on Tom’s tick list! Dial and Nippletop provided challenge and beauty with the miles and elevation gain. Tabletop’s approach was more pleasant, but the last half mile proved particularly dicey with a shark’s fin of snow taking up the narrow trail. Tom crushed it both days, always with a smile and a chuckle at the hard bits, reveling at the payoff views of the high peaks. 25 miles and 6000 feet of elevation gain over two days is not for the feint of heart this time of year, but Tom proved himself!

Todd and I completed a mega day out in the High Peaks (18 miles, 6000 ft elevation gain, 13.5 hours) tagging his 20th-23rd winter summits. Our first truly warm hike together this winter, we battled steep ascents, deteriorating snow, and high winds. But it was all smiles all day with incredible views throughout the day. What a way to close out the winter hiking season!

Winter weather fuels Adirondackers in their favorite outdoor pursuits! The 3P Race (Pole, Pedal, Paddle) is an awesome community event here in @saranaclake that showcases the joy in outdoor movement, no matter the sport. 13.4 miles of alpine skiing, biking, Nordic skiing, paddling (the still partially frozen river), running, and flat-out fun.

Yesterday, I cheered on Sarah and Dan skiing the formidable Johansen’s Last Call. I joined for Marcy (NY’s highest point) and the long ski out Mr. Van trail. It was a 20-mile, 4,180-foot vertical gain day for me (they did 30 miles!). The beer, fire, and music capped an epic day with best friends.

Went out for a solo recon mission of Marcy and Whale’s Tale. With the howling wind and blowing snow, I was unsurprised by the empty trails. Pretty cool to put in fresh tracks both up and down the mountain!

Both trails are in great shape. Only a couple of small obstacles on Marcy Trail above Indian Falls — both easily avoidable. I turned around near Little Marcy due to whiteout, so I can’t give you beta past there! Ski trail was mega fun.

Winter has well and truly arrived in the ADK.

I’m so proud of Petra as she completed her first-ever High Peak, Phelps, on Saturday! Although she was nervous about the cold and all that mileage in snowshoes, she absolutely rocked it out all day! The weather even cooperated, and we got a stunning view of the Great Range, Colden, the McIntyres, and more just as we poked out of the trees, and no wind to speak of!

We couldn’t have asked for better conditions for Petra’s first winter hike in the Adirondacks, and we’re already planning her next trip to the mountains. 1 down, 45 to go!

Back to Street & Nye (I promise we guide other mountains!) with @hikingwith_diane for the best weather and conditions of the past two weeks!

The weather was crisp, which gave us nice firm trails for most of the day, and the sunny view at Street was amazing! Even microspikes colluding with tree roots trying to trip us up couldn’t keep our spirits down. And learning a new skill to hike the frozen trails with them was a highlight of the day.

We had a great time in the backcountry, with big props to Diane as she completed the 9th and 10th peaks of her 46ers. 🤞 for good weather the rest of the week!

Tom and I had the whole mountain to ourselves today as we took on Street ( ft) and Nye (ft)! After our 11-hour hike yesterday, we moved a little slower up the trail while navigating our boots carefully through each icy step.

We reached the summits before the clouds rolled in, giving us pristine views over the McIntyres, Santanonis, and Sewards. We even caught a glimpse of Gothics, which we summited yesterday. With temps warming, we had to be extra careful on the descent, trying to avoid punching through the ice into mud and water below.

Crossing back over Indian Pass Brook was our final challenge, which we dispatched with ease, and were rewarded with a fantastic view of the moonrise on our drive out from the Loj. Another perfect day in the peaks.

Winter is sneaking back into the Adirondacks! I had a wonderful time with Jason and Henry as we conquered Street & Nye Mountains today. The frost flowers were in full bloom, and we broke out the microspikes for the first time this season. Although they were capped with clouds when we started, both summits greeted us with crystal clear views of the snow crystals atop the rest of the high peaks. 8.1 miles and 2600 ft elevation gain. 🏔️ 📷

I love the iPhone mini and this is exactly how Apple should prioritize for a new one. Battery life is paramount, regular performance is fine, and fit the best cameras you can with the space left. I’d love a Pro version, but it’s probably impossible to cram everything into a smaller chassis.

Saturday found me guiding Jim and Matt up their first High Peak. Whiteface was a formidable choice for their first, especially as we opted for the more adventurous up-and-over route via Whiteface Landing. (What a great route!) Old ideas have a way of coming back, so I wouldn’t be surprised to see the Touch Bar come back in some new form down the road, and I hope that if it does it will take lessons from the Stream Deck.

@matt@isfeeling.social said everything I wanted to about the Touch Bar in this post. I like how we’re all converging on this idea that Touch Bar plus the Function Row could have been great.

📷🧗 Got over to Cloudspin Cliff with Matt Oaks and @saw_dust_ery last night. Cool cliff with awesome views of Whiteface. Led up Sundays are for Friends (5.8) not clean, but felt good to test a piece again. Then top roped CCR (5.10a) after Oakcy put up the rope in the dark. Incredible climb. Can’t wait to get back there.
